When I first heard him in late '71 and got his first album in '72, I had a feeling this guy was gonna go all the way to the top of the charts. Unlike some other artists' deaths in the early '70's, I can recall exactly where I was when I read the news flash of Jim Croce's death. I felt like a piece of America, and maybe Jim's music, had died. But, almost 37 years later, his songs are still going strong. I'm glad I was wrong.

Amazing talent, sadly lost, you wont see performers like Jim now days, we are too caught up in the big show the dance and performance of the American Idol performers. Jim was no model or didnt have flashing lights or smoke behind him, just true talent and and he used that singing songwriting ability with his talent for making the guitar sing along with him. Just like kfromkansas below, I too still remember those days in high school with Jim Croce's music playing on the radio. So many artists that sang those great folksy songs like James Taylor, John Denver, Cat Stevens. I learned to play guitar on my own and of course had to learn Jim Croce's songs. I was a freshly minted highschool sophmore on September 21, 1973 and I remember driving to school that morning and hearing that Jim Croce had been killed in a plane crash the night before. Everyone passing in the hall of our highschool was silent and grim. A poet of our generation had been taken too soon. Now, as a woman of 52 I still enjoy listening to this man's music and find bittersweet solace in his talent. Thank you, Jim, for your beautiful words and music
